Beam Position Measurement Section (BP)

The BI Beam Position Measurement Section designs and maintains systems measuring the transverse position of the various particle beams used at CERN. The section is responsible for around 2000 Beam Position Monitors (BPM) installed across the accelerator complex. A typical BPM system is a chain of an in-vacuum electromagnetic sensor, front-end analogue RF circuit, high-speed digitizer, FPGA and back-end software.

Experimental Areas, e-Beam, Ion Monitors Section (XEI)

The Experimental Areas, e-Beam, Ion Monitors (XEI) section of the Beam Instrumentation (BI) group is responsible for the development, production, installation and commissioning of the beam instrumentation that measure the parameters of the beams extracted to the SPS and PS experimental areas. The section is also in charge of the LEIR and AD electron coolers as well as the ionisation profile monitors in these machines which are needed to measure the performance of the coolers. For the ELENA project, the section will provide a new low energy electron cooler, transverse profile monitors and is actively pursuing R&D in low energy (100 keV) beam diagnostics needed for the new experimental lines.

Intensity and Tune Measurement Section (IQ)

The BI Intensity and Tune Measurement Section develops and maintains all intensity (number of charged particles) and tune (resonant beam oscillations) measurement systems throughout the CERN accelerator complex. We are a multi-cultural team of electronics technicians, engineers and physicists.

Mechanics and Logistics Section (ML)

The Mechanics and Logistics section is responsible for: Development, electro-mechanical design, construction, installation and maintenance of instrumentation made under the responsibility of the BI group; R&D, testing and qualification of new materials and methods for beam instrument production; Group-wide coordination of installation and shutdown planning; Group-wide support in mechanical production and analysis. The ML section works across all CERN accelerators and on current and future projects. It manages laboratories and a mechanical workshop on the Prevessin site as well as conventional and radioactive storage in Meyrin.
